Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

We use IASTM (muscle scraping) to improve blood flow to an area and break up soft tissue restrictions (muscle knots, scar tissue, etc), for a deeper and longer lasting relief than is possible by use of hands only. Some soreness or bruising may occur within 24 hours due to the improved circulation and healing response, but it is followed by muscle loosening and pain relief.

What is IASTM (muscle scraping)?
– A type of soft tissue mobilization technique that uses stainless steel instruments to break up scar tissue and release fascial restrictions.

Indications:

  • Release scar tissue
  • Break soft tissue adhesions
  • Remove fascial restrictions
  • Increase blood flow and stimulate cellular regeneration
  • Promote healing and release stagnant chi / energy
  • Used for a wide variety of soft tissue injuries, including but not limited to:
    • Medial and lateral epicondylalgia
    • Rotator cuff tendinopathy (any tendinopathy)
    • Iliotibial band friction syndrome
    • Plantar fasciitis

Precautions/Contraindications:

  • Bleeding disorders or blood‐thinning medication
  • Healing wounds or burns
  • Unhealed suture sights
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) / Varicose veins
  • Lymphedema
  • Skin infections
  • Hematoma
  • Myositis Ossificans
  • Fractures
  • Severe osteoporosis

Side effects to IASTM?

  • Discomfort during treatment & temporary soreness after
  • Temporary bruising or petechiae (red dots)
